Helen Mae Stephenson

Helen Mae Stephenson, 96, of Michigan City, Indiana, formerly of Zanesville, passed away January, 15, 2015, at Rittenhouse of Michigan City. She was born August 31, 1918, in East Fultonham, the daughter of the late Howard Franklin and Mignon L. (Carter) Roberts. A 1936 graduate of Lash High School, Helen Mae went on to receive a Bachelor of Science Degree, and a year of graduate work in Dietetics from The Ohio State University. On February 5, 1942, she married Charles J. Stephenson, who preceded her in death on September 12, 1990. Following their marriage, they resided in Weirton, West Virginia and Steubenville, before moving to Michigan City, Indiana in 1960 when Charles was transferred to the newly opened Midwest Steel Division of National Steel Corp. in Portage, Indiana. A tireless, life-long volunteer, Helen Mae applied her many talents while active in organizations such as P.E.O. and Eastern Star and as a 50-year member of the First Presbyterian Church. She was also an active member of Michigan City’s former Memorial Hospital Auxiliary for many years, and eventually became the Head Buyer and Manager of the hospital’s gift shop. She was an avid golfer, accomplished bridge player, and was still achieving bowling scores near 200 well into her 90’s. A seasoned traveler, she greatly enjoyed visiting many locations within in the US, as well as such faraway places as Greece, France, Turkey, the Czech Republic, and the South Pacific. Surviving are her son, Gregg (Gloria) Stephenson of LaGrange, Illinois; her daughter, Susan Stephenson (Debra Bricault) of Michigan City, Indiana; one granddaughter, Heidi (Jamey) Sass of Lombard, Illinois; one grandson, Sean (Mindie Kniss) Stephenson of Scottsdale, Arizona; and one great-granddaughter, Avery Sass. Helen Mae will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband in Fultonham Cemetery where a graveside service will be held.
