Joseph J. Batross Jr.

Joseph J. Batross, Jr. 87 of Zanesville, died Wednesday, October 12, 2016 at his home. He was born Saturday, May 18, 1929 in Sistersville, WV, the son of Joseph Batross, Sr. and Georgia A. (Keck) Batross. He was married on Thursday, January 25, 1951 to Sally (Meissner) Batross who survives. He was a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church. Joseph retired from Grief Brothers and Batross Market; he served in the US Navy and US Marine Reserves. He was a Life member of the Zanesville Moose Lodge #867, where he was awarded the highest honor bestowed by the Moose Lodge, The Pilgrim of the Moose and also served 10 years as the administrator of Moose Lodge #867. He was also a life member of American Legion post #29. He was an avid card player especially at the Moose Lodge. He is survived by his wife of over 65 years Sally, four sons: Gregory (Suzann) Batross, Tyler (Connie) Batross all of Zanesville, Daryl Batross of Las Vegas, NV and Joseph Batross, III of Columbus; three daughters: Debbie (Robert) Riffle, of Zanesville, Deana (Larry) Batross-Neff of Frazeysburg, Denise (Doug) Liggett of Melrose, FL.; sixteen grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren, two great, great grandchildren, two brothers: Martin Batross of Columbus, and Tim (Brenda) Batross of Jackson, TN; two sisters: Bonita Baum and Judy (Ray) Goodrich all of Zanesville, and two sisters-in-law: Bonnie Gorsky, and Nancy Williamson. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by three brothers-in-law: Richard Baum, Tom Gorsky, and Wayne Williamson; a sister-in-law: Candy Batross and his mother & father-in-law: Ralph & Mary Virginia Meissner. The family would like to thank Tee Jay’s restaurant and Sam’s Club for their thoughtfulness and to the caring staff at the Genesis Hospice & Palliative Care and Genesis Hospital. Where the Loyal Order of the Moose will conduct funeral rites at 4:00 PM and a Prayer Vigil will be held at 7:45 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 AM Monday, October 17, 2016 at Saint Nicholas Catholic Church 955 Main Street, Zanesville with Father Martin Ralko as celebrant. Burial will conclude in the Mount Olive Cemetery with VFW Post 1058 and American Legion Post 29 conducting Full Military Honors.
