Julia Marie Ginikos

Julia M. Ginikos, 90, died at 8:45 PM, August 7, 2022, surrounded by her family. She was born on December 4, 1931, in Zanesville, the daughter of John Hanifan and Mary (Euman) Hanifan. She married Markos D. Ginikos on January 15, 1953, and was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. As a child, Julia sang on the WHIZ radio weekly music matinees in the 30’s and 40’s. She professionally sang with bands such as Jimmy Dorsey, Tommy Dorsey, Virgil Drum, Darrell Davis Combo, FireHouse Five and her band, the Mystics, from 1940-2015. She met her beloved husband during one of her performances. Singing wasn’t her only talent, though. Julia was a fantastic cook, an avid gardener, a Frank Sinatra enthusiast, devoted wife, and mother of three boys. Due to her upbringing in a large family during the Great Depression, she learned how to stretch food and make it delicious both at home and while working for 14 years in the St. Thomas school cafeteria. She was infamous for her peanut butter slices, no-bake cookies, sugar cookies, and cinnamon rolls, so much so in fact that former students still talk about them today. Her grandchildren also looked forward to the pitcher of sweet tea and a variety of goodies she had ready for them after school. A devout Catholic, Julia was passionate about making sure that her children and grandchildren received a Catholic education. She exemplified truly Christ-like compassion, kindness, and love. She was patient and never met a stranger and loved every person she met and would do anything for anyone. She was known for filling the pockets of mail carriers, grocery employees, medical offices, and other friends with bags of candy and even chocolate chip pancakes she carried around “just in case.” She was the start of a beautiful legacy which she would have wanted to be continued by the multitude of friends and family she leaves behind. Julia is survived by two children: John (Dee) Ginikos of Nashport and Matthew (Gina) Ginikos of Westerville; six grandchildren: Mark (Jessica) Ginikos, III, Kelsey (Brianne) Reiss, Samuel (Laura) Ginikos, Alyssa (Ryan) Amspaugh, Michael (Angel) Ginikos and Amanda (Josh) Hetzer; eleven great-grandchildren: Jax, Roman, Nora, Luna, Elise, Sasha, Huck, Lucas, Gia, Andrew and Julia due in September; two sisters: Velma (Dan) Linscott and her twin sister, Jo Davis both of Zanesville and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. In addition to her parents, Julia was preceded in death by her husband: Markos Ginikos who died June 8, 1998; her son: Markos Ginikos II; eight siblings: Mary Smythe, Helen Mercer, John Hanifan, Albert Hanifan, Suzann Hanifan, Frank Hanifan, June Carr, and infant David Hanifan. Her family would like to thank Shriver’s Hospice, her in-home care nurses, and all of her compassionate caregivers. Friends may call from 3:00 to 7:00 PM, Thursday, August 11, 2022, at the Hillis, Combs & Nestor Funeral Home, 935 Forest Avenue, Zanesville. Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 AM, Friday, at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, 925 Main St, Zanesville, with Fr. Martin J. Ralko as celebrant. Julia will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband: Markos and son, Markos II in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
