William "Bill" Smith

William D. “Bill” Smith, 81 of Zanesville, died 2:00 PM Wednesday, August 24, 2011 at Genesis Morrison House Hospice, following a six-month illness. He was born Sunday, September 15, 1929 in Lowell, IN, the son of Walter Clark Smith and Helen June (Schilling) Smith. He married Louise (Gabriel) Smith on Friday, May 11, 1979 and was a member of St. James Episcopal Church. Bill was the 1st Eagle Scout in Lowell, IN and was President of Lowell High School Class of 1949. He was a member of ROTC while at The University of Indiana where he graduated with a Degree in Bacteriology. Bill retired from Merck, Sharpe & Dohme Pharmaceutical Company in 1980 following 25 years of service. He was a member of the Zanesville Noon Rotary Club since 1975 and a Paul Harris Fellow. He was an Instrument Rated Private Pilot and member of Zanesville Aviation Community. Bill is survived by his wife: Louise; one daughter: Karen Elizabeth (Paul Christopher) Stoddard of St. Paul, MN; two sons: David Clark (Rhonda) Smith of Lebanon, IN and Brian Keith Smith of Escondido, CA; three step daughters: Crystal Ann (John) Engle of Zanesville, Victoria Jean (Stephen) McElfresh of Zanesville and Tracy Louise Woestendiek of Lockbourne; five grandchildren: Adam Christopher Stoddard, Laura Elizabeth Stoddard, Jessica Elizabeth (Aaron) Wilhoite, Jared David Smith and Joelynn Marie Smith; two step grandchildren: Michael Frederick Engle, Nicholas Scott Engle; one great granddaughter: Claire Elizabeth Wilhoite; one sister: Barbara Ruth (Arnold) Herr and one brother: Jon Roger Smith both of Lowell, IN. In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by one sister in law: Evelyn Smith and several beloved aunts and uncles. Friends may call from 5:00 to 8:00 PM, Friday, August 26, 2011 at The Hillis & Hardwick Funeral Home, 935 Forest Avenue. A funeral Mass will be celebrated 11:00 AM Saturday, at St. James Episcopal Church, 155 North 6th Street, Zanesville, with Fr. Robert Willman as celebrant.
