Mr. Jack Wallace "Wally" Moore

Jack Wallace 'Wally'' Moore, 90 of Zanesville, died 9:57 PM Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at Autumn Care Center in Newark. He was born Sunday, August 13, 1922 in Zanesville, the son of Harry C. Moore and Esther (Wallace) Moore-Geehring. He married Betty (Brown) Moore on Saturday, June 30, 1945 who preceded him in death on Sunday, November 29, 2009. Wally graduated from Lash High School in 1940, which was the first class to use The Secrest Auditorium for their graduation ceremonies. Following his graduation from Meredith Business College he was employed at the Philo Ohio Power Plant for a short time. Wally then began a 27-year career with Line Material in quality control, inspection and analytical engineering, where he was Value Manager and Quality Control Manager. He then joined the Higbee Manufacturing Company in New Lexington for the following 12 years. After his retirement from Higbee, Wally devoted his time to part time sales at Stambaughs Home Improvement Store. In his youth his family moved to the Putnam area where Wally was exposed to history of the area, which became very captivating to him. It stirred his interest in the rest of Zanesville and The Muskingum River, which he never lost. Wally even published a small pamphlet on how the Muskingum River must have looked during the early pioneer and Indian days. Wally, with his small gesture of kindness, took an interest in Zanesville’s appearance and started a movement within the city to make Zanesville and the riverfront a cleaner and better place to live. His efforts to clear away trash and loose debris from curbs, sidewalks and streets throughout the downtown and riverfront areas resulted in a citywide effort that is now an annual event, “Wally Moore Day.” Wally Moore Day, is observed in late spring with many organizations and community volunteers coming together to spruce up the downtown and the riverfront areas. Wally received the Sertoma Service to Mankind Award on two different occasions. With most of his jobs and interests involving close contact with people, he developed a free and easy relationship with everyone he met whether young or old. He had a great sense of humor, which, made for a very relaxed and comfortable friendship for anyone who knew him. With Wally’s efforts, he has demonstrated that one man can make a difference. In Wally's own words "It was hard work but it was very worthwhile." Wally is survived by one sister: Joyce (Charles) McCracken of Sun City AZ; one niece: Karen (Richard) Durst of Westerville; three nephews: Jack (Beth) Brown of Zanesville, Glenn (Linda) McCracken of Henderson, NV and Douglas McCracken of Ottawa Lake, MI and countless friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of over 64 years: Betty Brown Moore. Friends may call from 4:00 to 6:00 PM, Saturday, May 4, 2013 at The Hillis, Combs & Nestor Funeral Home, 935 Forest Avenue and from 2:00 to 3:00 PM on Sunday.
